The Cancer Journey

Key Note Presentation
Intentional Healing with Cancer
Michael Lerner

Intentional healing is the deliberate skillful effort to remove stressful obstacles to healing and enhance sources of possible nurturance. Intentional healing is highly individual. It integrates physical, emotional, mental and spiritual approaches. Becoming a healthier person with cancer improves quality of life and may extend life as well.

Michael Lerner is president and co-founder of Commonweal in Bolinas, California. Commonweal's purpose is to help us heal ourselves and care for the earth. Founded in 1976, Commonweal has twelve programs in healing, learning, environment and justice. Michael is co-founder of the Commonweal Cancer Help Program, which for 26 years has offered week-long retreats for people with cancer. He is the author of "Choices in Healing: Integrating the Best of Conventional and Complementary Approaches to Cancer" from MIT Press. His other principle work at Commonweal is with The New School and the Collaborative on Health and the Environment (CHE). CHE is an international science dialogue network. The New School offers conversations with thought leaders on nature, culture and the inner life. Michael received a MacArthur Prize Fellowship in 1983 for contributions to public health.

Wisdom Healing Qigong
Bonnie O'Brien Jonsson,
Health Coach, Certified Chi Center Teacher

Wisdom Healing Qigong is an ancient practice that helps to revitalize and heal the body, mind and spirit. Please join us for the morning Qigong class. We welcome new and experienced students.

Wisdom Healing Qigong is the healing path and practice that infuses my life. I experience it as the perfect balance of physical and energetic healing within a deep spiritual practice that grounds me in my body. After going through surgery, chemotherapy and radiation for breast cancer in 2008, I turned to this practice. It became the vehicle to regain my joie de vivre, physical strength and life energy. I am a health educator with extensive practice and training in teaching mind/body practices and insight meditation. I created and lead the bay area Year to Live groups and teach Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction through the Osher Center for Integrative Medicine at UCSF. I am a member of the Chi Center's Teacher Training advisory group.

Telling Ourselves Well:
The Healing Power of Story & Laughter
Terri Tate RN, MS

Teaching storytelling to thousands of people has convinced Terri Tate that we are all brimming with stories waiting to be told, and that sharing them with each other helps us heal. Terri will describe how telling her stories and laughing with life have helped her along the healing path from disfiguring oral cancer. She will share excerpts from her award-winning solo show, Shopping as a Spiritual Path. After a briefing on how to easily access and tell your own stories, you will get a chance to experience the healing power of story and laughter first-hand.

Terri Tate RN, MS is a speaker, storyteller and consultant whose life and voice were threatened by two bouts of oral cancer from which she had a 2% chance of survival. But her sense of humor was never in danger. Terri's hilarious solo show, Shopping as a Spiritual Path, chronicles life's challenges and triumphs. Terri also offers customized keynotes, workshops and webinars. Audiences across the country are moved to laughter, tears and standing ovations by her powerful performances. Terri also teaches storytelling classes that emphasize healing, comfort in speaking and building the humor muscle. She is putting the finishing touches on her memoir, As Is, with an introduction by Anne Lamott.

Tending the Soul
Annie Deichmann-O'Connor, MFT

I received my MA in Integral Counseling Psychology from the California Institute of Integral Studies (CIIS) in 1992. I have been licensed as a Marriage and Family Therapist since 1997. I trained at the School of Lost Borders as a vision quest guide in 1993 and the Authentic Movement Institute from 1999 ~ 2002, and afterwards with Janet Adler exploring energetic phenomenon. My lifelong love of learning keeps my work evolving; my most recent schooling has been a Two-Year Training in Celtic Shamanism from 2007 ~ 2009 taught by Tom Cowan. I see myself as a soul midwife, awakening the inner witness that helps support the healing journey. I believe that we are meant to experience the sacred directly through the vessel of the body, heart and mind. I believe that awakening and supporting creative expression is an important aspect of therapy.
