Ceres Café closed on March 9, 2018. The Café is one of 4 programs Ceres Community Project offers at the SAY Dream Center in Santa Rosa. The remaining programs: training youth volunteers to make healing meals for our neighbors facing a serious health challenge; training youth to grow fresh organic vegetables for use in our meals; and a catering service that provides paid youth work experience and healthy food for events and office lunches, will continue. Ceres is not leaving the Dream Center, just changing our programming to engage more youth and deliver more meals to our clients.
We are deeply grateful to the Café’s patrons for their support, and to our interns, volunteers and staff for creating a warm and welcoming environment for friends to meet and enjoy a healthy, delicious meal. The Café has been an incredible opportunity for Ceres to spread its message, make new friends, support young people and so much more. As sad as we all are to say good-bye to the Café, unfortunately we simply aren’t in a position to keep doing everything we are doing. Ceres serves many clients not reached by other Sonoma County meal programs. Our waiting list is growing, and closing the Café will free up the resources we need to expand this program, which has always been, and will remain, the core of our work.
Ceres worked with 125 young people at our Santa Rosa kitchen last year, providing mentoring, healthy eating education, leadership and job skills training and a safe, rewarding place to serve the community. We are deeply committed to our youth programs, and we look forward to engaging even more young people this year in our garden, after-school meal program and catering in Santa Rosa. Our Café staff and interns, as well as adult volunteers, will have opportunities to work in our other programs as well.
SAY and Ceres are wholly separate and independent nonprofit entities, and our relationship will not change with the Café’s closing. We (Ceres) made the decision to close the Café due to our need to allocate more resources to our Healing Meals program, and we’re grateful that SAY will continue to make the commercial kitchen available for that purpose. We look forward to continuing to welcome Dream Center residents and other youth served by SAY to our programs. We’re grateful for this ongoing opportunity to partner with the dedicated staff of SAY.
Thank you for your support of Ceres and the clients and youth we serve.
